About our soloistsDr. Joe Brashier recently retired after 44 years in Music Education. He earned Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctorate in Conducting from the University of Kansas. His career included 13 years of public school teaching and collegiate positions at Appalachian State University, Rutgers University and Valdosta State University. He has had the fortune of conducting bands throughout the U.S., Europe, China and Australia. He is also an avid tennis player. He and his wife Susan (oboe) relocated to Hendersonville in 2018. They have two daughters that they tolerated in order to have the two wonderful grandchildren they brought into the world. Joel Helfand is a graduate of Chicago Musical College. Joel ran a successful band for many years in the Chicago area. At conventions, he was fortunate to work with many outstanding entertainers including Doc Severinson, Sara Vaughn, Tex Beneke, Helen O'Connell and Red Skelton. He retired to Hendersonville in 2005 and ha since worked on staff at the Flat Rock Playhouse, Asheville Community Theatre, The Hendersonville Symphony, The Brevard Philharmonic, Asheville Jazz Orchestra, Hendersonville Community Band, Brevard Community Band and was a backup for the Temptations at the Biltmore. Don Wauchope has been playing french horn for fun for 64 years, except for a ten year break for college (UNC) and graduate school (NCSU). A retired USDA agricultural research scientist, Don has played in bands and orchestras in Georgia, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Arkansas and North and South Carolina. He played in the Brevard and Asheville Symphonies in High School and currently plays for the Brevard Philharmonic, The Hendersonville and Brevard Community Bands, The Upstate Winds, The Brevard College Wind Ensemble, The Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass, and The Premier Brass Quintet.
