HCB Fall Concert October 2017

                                     Hendersonville Community Band Fall Concert

The Hendersonville Community Band will perform “Songs of the British Isles” at the annual Fall concert conducted by Winford Franklin on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 3pm. The concert will be held at the Blue Ridge Conference Hall located on the campus of the Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, NC.
The audience will take a musical trip around the Isles as the band showcases tunes from that area. Ken Mace playing the euphonium is featured in ”Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms”. This Irish tune was made famous from a “Little Rascals” film.  Another Irish tune for band is “The Girl I Left Behind Me” used as background music for several John Wayne westerns
and the sentimental favorite “The Last Rose Of Summer” both selections composed by Leroy  Anderson.
Next the audience will immediately recognize  three English selections beginning with “Old Scottish Melody” composed by Charles Wiley and known as “Auld Lang Syne” to current day listeners.
A suite of three English sea songs composed by Ralph Vaughn Williams in 1924 to celebrate his nation’s naval heritage “Princess Royal”, “Admiral Benvow” and “Portsmouth”.  His fellow composer Gustav Holst fashioned his “Second Suite in F for Military Band “ which begins with a march and then includes a dance tune the Dargason and then the famous melody Greensleves”.
“Mannin Veen” a 1933 tone poem written by Hayden Wood from the Isle of Mann  includes the lovely “Manx Fisherman’s Evening Hymn” a tribute to his isle’s musical culture.
British bandmaster Kenneth Alford ‘s “Colonel Bogey March” became the theme music for American David Lean’s 1957 film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, a familiar march to all.
Australian composer Percy Grainger’s lovely  composition “Country Gardens” was a birthday gift to his mother and his “Australian  Up-Country Tune” sounds like a folk song but was originally written to imitate Stephen Foster’s music.
To top off the afternoon “Bond…James Bond” just might sneak in there to help us relive that most familiar movie.
This concert will please all who attend so drop the fall chores and enjoy a travelogue of afternoon band concert music.
Tickets are available for $10 adults, students free and may be purchased from any band member, Hendersonville Visitor’s Center, Crate Wine Market in Laurel Park or at the door the afternoon of the concert.
